HEALING POWER OF MUSIC

CARTAGENA, APRIL 2010

Music transcends mere entertainment, serving as a universal language that elevates the human spirit, fosters social unity, and catalyst change across diverse communities. Extensive research supports its profound impact on personal well-being and community connection, underscoring music's role in healing and bridging societal divisions.

In collaboration with Playing For Change, a project renowned for producing original "Songs Around The World" that emphasize the unifying power of music across cultures, our goal was to showcase Colombia's vibrant musical heritage on the global stage. Through the production of Carlos Vives' "La Tierra del Olvido," we united over 75 musicians from across Colombia, creating a video that not only celebrates Colombian culture but also features contributions from artists and NGOs, notably Fundación Batuta and Canta Conmigo por la Reintegración. These partnerships highlight the country's commitment to using music for social integration and healing, primarily focusing on reintegrating demobilized combatants into society. This initiative, produced in collaboration with Natalia Mejia, Manuela Mejia, and Fernando Rodriguez-Vila, is a testament to music's capacity to mend nations, cultures, and hearts. "La Tierra del Olvido" seeks to unite and inspire the Colombian people, motivating them to move beyond decades of conflict towards a hopeful future.

The Healing Power of Music initiative was launched at the World Economic Forum in Cartagena, Colombia, on March 7, 2010, featuring a session on music's ability to foster social justice and unity, accompanied by a concert with Marc Anthony, Carlos Vives, and Toto la Momposina.

Proceeds from this initiative supported Allan Kassin and his NGO, Fundación One Santuario Natural, in building a music school in Palenque San Basilio—a community founded in the early 1600s by runaway slaves from Africa. This community retains a strong cultural heritage, including elements of their language, medicine, and music. As Colombia approaches its bicentennial, marked by a history of violence and war, San Basilio has already celebrated its bicentennial, continuing to thrive despite economic challenges. Despite the encroachments of modernity, San Basilio stands as a proud testament to resilience and adaptation.
