COURAGE FORUM

new york, MoMA, may 2010

In March 2010, Richard Branson and French highwire artist Philippe Petit co-chaired the Courage Forum at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This event celebrated the power of individual bravery in shaping society. Under the theme of "daring ideas," the forum showcased visionaries who defied personal and societal challenges to inspire change and innovation. Drawing inspiration from the philosophies of Immanuel Kant and influenced by the legacies of families of survivors and entrepreneurs, the forum emphasized the role of strong individuals in driving history forward.

The Courage Forum at MoMA celebrated the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. It underscored the belief that bravery, whether in the face of danger, injustice, or the unknown, is a crucial driver of social and historical change. The event inspired attendees, with the conference motto resonating long after: "Both the strong and the weak feel fear, but the strong overcome their fear."

Featuring a lineup of speakers from diverse backgrounds, including legendary war correspondent Bob Simon, investigative reporter John Lee Anderson, and former child soldiers Lopez Lomong and Emmanuel Jal, the forum illuminated stories of physical, moral, and intellectual courage. Discussions ranged from the harrowing experiences of war correspondents and the resilience of child soldiers to the transformative actions of political figures like Gen. Juan Emilio Cheyre, who led Chile's Truth and Reconciliation process.

José Junior's AfroReggae initiative and Isabel Miranda de Wallace's anti-kidnapping activism highlighted innovative approaches to social challenges, demonstrating the power of courage in urban and social struggles. Captain Paul Watson represented environmental and conservation efforts, while Sir Richard Branson shared his entrepreneurial journey, underscoring the moral imperatives behind business decisions.
